I spent fifteen years in operating rooms fixing problems that started at the dinner table.
As a board-certified surgeon, I watched patient after patient come through with conditions tied to diet. Heart disease. Metabolic dysfunction. Autoimmune flares. And almost none of them had ever been told by a doctor that what they eat might be the single most important decision they make for their health.
That bothered me enough to do something about it. I started Farm 2 Family to connect families directly to regenerative farms, with a physician's understanding of what nutrient-dense food actually does in the body. We source from local farmers markets and deliver to families. Farmers keep doing what they do. Families get food that heals.
I'm also a member of Tony Robbins' Platinum Partners community, which is where I first connected with the work Tony has been doing around hunger in America. And what just happened at the federal level is worth paying attention to.
The government just validated what we've been building
On May 27, 2026, HHS and USDA announced the Coalition to Close the Protein Gap, a $40 million public-private initiative to permanently close America's 800-million-pound annual charitable protein gap. The goal: deliver up to 3 billion protein-rich meals to American families every year.
That number is real. Protein is the most requested food in the charitable food system, but only 14% of what actually gets distributed. The biggest barrier isn't supply. American farmers produce enough. The barrier is cold storage, logistics, and the infrastructure to get real food from farms to families.
The coalition includes HHS, USDA, the CDC Foundation, and every major protein producer in the country: Cargill, Tyson, Perdue, Simmons Foods, and more. Tony Robbins, who has provided over 1 billion meals in the last 12 years through his hunger advocacy work, is personally matching donations up to $8 million through HATCH For Hunger's national crowdfunding campaign with the CDC Foundation.
HATCH has been doing this work for over a decade. They source protein directly from U.S. farmers, manage cold-chain logistics, and delivered over 102 million meals across 120 food banks in 2025. Now they have $40 million and a federal partnership to scale it.
This didn't happen in a vacuum
Back in January, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins released the most significant reset of federal nutrition policy in decades. The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans deliver a clear message: eat real food.
For the first time, the federal government is recommending Americans avoid highly processed foods. The guidelines prioritize protein over carbohydrates. They acknowledge what many of us in medicine have known for years: nearly 90% of healthcare spending goes toward treating chronic disease, much of it directly linked to diet. More than 70% of American adults are overweight or obese. Nearly 1 in 3 adolescents has prediabetes.
The "Eat Real Food" initiative isn't a suggestion. It's a correction. And the $40 million Coalition is the infrastructure commitment to back it up.
What's still missing
Here's what I see as a surgeon and as someone building a food network from the ground up.
The Coalition is focused on closing the protein gap in the charitable food system, which matters enormously. Food banks need protein. Families in need deserve real food, and HATCH has proven they can deliver it at scale.
But there's another gap that federal funding and food bank logistics don't address: the families who aren't in the charitable food system but still can't access real food.
The family in Nashville who wants grass-fed beef and pastured eggs but doesn't have four hours on a Saturday to drive to a farmers market. The mom in Asheville who changed her kid's diet after an ADHD diagnosis and can't find a reliable source of nutrient-dense food outside the grocery store. The dad in Raleigh who read about the new dietary guidelines and wants to follow them but doesn't know where to start.
These families have the income and the motivation. They just don't have the infrastructure. The local farms exist. The food exists. The last-mile connection between the farm and the family doesn't.
That's the gap Farm 2 Family exists to close.
How we're building the local version
Our model is simple. We partner with regenerative farms at local farmers markets. We pick up product at the market. We deliver to subscriber families. Farmers keep their booths, their regulars, and their existing operations. They get an additional revenue stream without changing anything about how they farm.
Families get curated, nutrient-dense food from farms they can trust, delivered to their door. With a physician's perspective on what actually supports metabolic health, gut healing, and long-term wellness.
We're currently building in Asheville, Nashville, and the Raleigh-Durham Triangle. Three markets with thriving local farm communities, strong health-conscious consumer bases, and the kind of food access gap that the federal guidelines are now asking families to solve.
The $40 million Coalition will help food banks get more protein. The "Eat Real Food" guidelines will help families understand what they should be eating. What we're building is the bridge between knowing what to eat and actually getting it from a farm you can trust.
What you can do right now
If you're a family who wants access to local, regenerative, nutrient-dense food, join us. We're building the network in your area and early members will shape what it looks like.
If you're a farmer at a market in Asheville, Nashville, or the Triangle, we'd love to talk. Our model adds revenue without adding work. You keep your booth. We bring you more customers.
If you're a practitioner who recommends dietary changes to patients and wishes there was a reliable source of real food to point them to, that's exactly what we're building.
The federal government just put $40 million behind the idea that real food is essential to health. We agree. And we're making it happen at the local level, one farmers market at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is Farm 2 Family different from a CSA or grocery delivery service? A CSA locks you into one farm's output for the season. Grocery delivery services ship industrial food from warehouses. We curate across multiple local regenerative farms at farmers markets and add a physician-guided nutrition layer. You get variety, quality, and medical credibility in one subscription.
What does the new $40 million Coalition mean for local food access? The Coalition to Close the Protein Gap focuses on getting protein into food banks and the charitable food system. That's critical work. Farm 2 Family addresses a different gap: families who have the income and motivation to eat well but lack convenient access to local regenerative farms. Both gaps need closing.
How can I support this as a farmer? If you sell at a farmers market in Asheville, Nashville, or Raleigh-Durham, or beyond, visit farm2family.community/farmer-application or reach out to us directly. Our model lets you keep your booth and your existing customers while adding a new revenue stream through our subscriber base.
